Return-to-work guide

Returning to work after a slip, trip or fall

A slip, trip or fall can leave very different injuries behind, so no two returns look the same. What stays constant is the process: a return-to-work plan built around the capacity your treating doctor certifies, and duties that fit both your recovery and the place you work. Nexus Rehab coordinates that plan across everyone involved.

Starting the return-to-work plan

A return to work is easier to shape when it starts early, while the claim is fresh and the workplace is still expecting you back. Nexus Rehab acts as the coordinator from that first contact — reading the certificate of capacity your treating doctor issues and turning what it says into practical duties. What matters here is the documented capacity, not how the injury happened. The plan is built on what you can safely do now. As your doctor reviews and updates the certificate, the plan is adjusted to match.

Suitable duties and the work environment

Falls often have a lot to do with the physical setting — a wet floor, a cluttered walkway, poor lighting, an awkward step. That makes the worksite itself part of a safe return. Alongside suitable duties chosen to fit your certified capacity, a workplace assessment can look at where the injury happened and what might be adjusted before you are back doing that task. Duties can be modified so you avoid the specific activity involved while you build back up. The aim is a return that is safe to sustain, agreed by you, your employer and the insurer.

Who is involved and how it is funded

A return-to-work plan works when everyone moves to the same version of it. That means you, your employer, the insurer and your own healthcare team — who directs the medical side while Nexus Rehab coordinates the return. Under the NSW workers compensation scheme, Nexus Rehab is a SIRA-approved workplace rehabilitation provider, and approved services are funded by the insurer at no cost to you. Coverage extends across all of NSW, metropolitan and regional.

This is general information about returning to work, not medical advice. Your treating doctor directs your medical care — Nexus Rehab coordinates the return-to-work side and works to their certificate of capacity.

Common questions

Not directly. The plan is built on the capacity your treating doctor records in your certificate of capacity. What the cause can affect is the workplace side — if a hazard or a particular task was involved, reviewing and adjusting that part of the job is often part of returning safely.
