Recover at Work

The scheme principle that safe, suitable work is part of recovery, not something that waits until recovery is complete.

Also called: recovery at work

Definition

Recover at work is a principle central to the NSW workers compensation scheme and SIRA's guidance: safe, suitable work is treated as part of recovery, not something that only begins once recovery is complete. Rather than waiting at home for full recovery, an injured worker stays connected to work — or returns early — on suitable duties within their certified capacity. The concept shapes how claims are managed and how return-to-work plans are built. It applies whether the person stays with their pre-injury employer or moves to suitable employment elsewhere.

In practice

In a real claim, recovering at work means identifying what the person can safely do now and building the plan around it, rather than pausing everything until they are fully recovered. Nexus coordinates that: early contact, suitable duties agreed with the employer, and a plan kept within the certificate of capacity. We manage the return and keep the parties aligned; treatment and medical certification stay with the worker's own nominated treating doctor.
