SIRA (State Insurance Regulatory Authority)

The independent NSW regulator of the workers compensation, CTP and home building compensation schemes, and the body that approves workplace rehabilitation providers.

Also called: State Insurance Regulatory Authority

Definition

SIRA, the State Insurance Regulatory Authority, is the independent NSW government body that regulates the workers compensation, motor accident CTP and home building compensation schemes. It sets the standards insurers and providers must meet, issues the guidelines that govern how claims and return to work are handled, and approves the workplace rehabilitation providers permitted to work in the workers compensation scheme. SIRA regulates the system; it does not manage individual claims or fund treatment. It sits within the NSW Department of Customer Service.

In practice

SIRA approval is what allows a provider to deliver workplace rehabilitation under the scheme, and Nexus holds it as a SIRA-approved workplace rehabilitation provider. In a live claim, SIRA's guidelines shape how assessment, planning and return-to-work steps are documented and reported. Nexus works within that framework on every referral, across all of NSW.
