Compulsory Third Party (CTP)
The mandatory Green Slip insurance that funds treatment, care and income support for people injured in a NSW motor accident.
Also called: CTP · Green Slip · Green Slip insurance
Definition
Compulsory Third Party insurance — the Green Slip — is the cover every registered vehicle in NSW must hold. It funds treatment, care and income support for people injured in a motor accident, under the Motor Accident Injuries Act and the SIRA-regulated CTP scheme. Statutory benefits are available to most injured people regardless of who was at fault, at least for an initial period, and common law damages are possible in more serious cases. Claims are lodged with, and managed by, the relevant CTP insurer rather than a workers compensation scheme agent.
In practice
CTP becomes relevant to workplace rehabilitation when someone injured on the road also has a job to return to, or is hurt in a vehicle while working. Recovering at work still applies, and the CTP insurer approves the services that are reasonably necessary. Where Nexus is engaged, it coordinates the return-to-work side with the employer and the person's treating doctor and keeps the insurer updated, without stepping into treatment.
