Lifetime Care and Support Scheme

Definition

The Lifetime Care and Support Scheme provides treatment, rehabilitation and attendant care for people severely injured in a motor accident in NSW — for example a spinal cord or serious brain injury — funded for as long as it is needed. Cover applies regardless of who was at fault. The scheme is administered by icare and runs alongside, not inside, the CTP claim. A comparable arrangement, the Workers Care Program, supports workers with equivalent severe injuries. SIRA sets the framework both operate within.

In practice

Participants in Lifetime Care have their care needs coordinated by the scheme itself, so a workplace rehabilitation provider's role here is narrow and specific. Where a participant is working towards a return to suitable work, Nexus's contribution is vocational and workplace coordination — assessing duties and liaising with the employer — and never clinical care, which the scheme and treating team manage.
