Early Intervention Under NSW Workers Compensation
Under the NSW workers compensation scheme, the first weeks after a workplace injury shape the whole claim. Early intervention means Nexus Rehab reaches the injured worker while recovery is still on track, establishes what safe, suitable work looks like now, and aligns the plan with the nominated treating doctor's certificate of capacity. As a SIRA-approved workplace rehabilitation provider, Nexus coordinates that early work and liaises with the worker's own doctor. Nexus does not provide the medical treatment.
How early intervention works under workers compensation
The scheme is built around recovering at work rather than waiting out the injury. When a referral reaches us early, we contact the worker, explain the claim process in plain language, and screen for the suitable duties they can safely do now. We read the certificate of capacity issued by the nominated treating doctor and turn it into a workable recover-at-work plan: graded hours, modified tasks and agreed milestones that stay within what the doctor has certified. Where the pre-injury role can be adjusted, we plan for it; where it cannot, we flag that early so no time is lost. Throughout, Nexus coordinates between the worker, employer, insurer and healthcare team, and liaises with the worker's own doctor rather than directing treatment.
Who refers and who funds
A referral under this scheme can come from the insurer or scheme agent, the employer, the nominated treating doctor, or the injured worker directly. A feature that sets workers compensation apart is the worker's right to nominate their own workplace rehabilitation provider. A worker can name Nexus Rehab at any point in the claim and does not have to accept a provider chosen for them. Once we receive the referral, we seek the insurer's approval before any service begins. Approved workplace rehabilitation services are funded by the workers compensation insurer, not the injured worker, which means nothing out of pocket. We confirm funding and pre-approval on each file before we start.
What the early plan gives you
The output of early intervention is momentum with a record behind it. You get an initial needs assessment of current capacity, a first recover-at-work plan with realistic timeframes and agreed suitable duties, and early identification of any psychosocial or complex factors so they can be raised with the nominated treating doctor rather than missed. For the insurer and case manager, that means a claim actioned before it stalls. For the employer, a clear picture of the duties their worker can safely perform.
